Objective:

Standard repair technique for inguinal hernia is still not exist. In this study, we evaluated inguinal herni repairs in an education and research hospital.

Material and Methods:

Between years 2004 and 2006, records of 613 patients were evaluated.

Results:

Bilateral hernia repair was noted in 33 (5%) cases. Posterior wall repair was applied in 519 (80,4%) cases. Lichtenstein repair was applied in 105 (16,2%) cases. Other repair techniques which applied in remaining cases were Bassini, Shouldice and Stoppa. Lichtenstein repair was used by resident surgeons at ratio of 15,4%. The ratio for specialist surgeons was 29,1%.

Conclusion:

In surgical literature, recurrence rate of free tension repair techniques is lower than that of other techniques. In this study, posterior wall darn repair was preferred in 80% cases. It is shown that Lichtenstein repair was preferred mostly by specialist surgeons.
