Evaluation of cases with neurobrucellosis

Objective:

Brucellosis is an endemic infectious disease in Turkey. The neurological symptoms are common in brucellosis. Neurobrucellosis is a rare clinical form with central nervous system involvement.

Material and methods:

In this study six neurobrucellosis cases treated and followed in our clinics between years of 2000-2003 were investigated. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical and laboratory signs.

Results:

Four of six cases were diagnosed with isolation of Brucella bacteria from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood culture. Three cases recovered completely and the other three cases recovered with neurological sequela.

Conclusion:

Neurobrucellosis may manifest clasiccal symptoms as fever, headache, nuchal rigidity or nonspecific neurological symptoms as hearing loss, polyneuropathy.
