ABSTRACT
Objective:
To investigate the relationship between symptoms of mitral valve prolapse syndrome (MVPS) and ACE (I/D) genetic polymorphism.
Material and Methods:
A total of 120 cases (58 men, 62 women, mean age 43 years, range 19-81) were included in the study. 60 cases with mitral valve prolapse syndrome and 60 cases with normal mitral valve as defined by an echocardiographic examination were compared according to their ACE genetic polymorphism results. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine the genotypes.
Results:
The overall distribution of the genotypes was found to be DD 15 (12.5%) ID 83 (69.2%) II 22 (18.3%). In MVPS cases, the distribution was DD 11 (9.2%) ID 39 (32.5%) II 10 (8.3%). In control cases, the distribution was found to be DD 4 (3.3%) ID 44 (36.7%) II 12 (10%) with (p>0.05).
Conclusion:
ACE (I/D) genetic polymorphism does not seem to be related to the symptoms of mitral valve prolapse syndrome.
