ABSTRACT

Objective:

Coccydynia refers to pain originating from the coccyx, or tailbone. It is aimed to investigate the coexistence of coccydynia with hemorrhoid which is similar afflictions in the same region.

Material and Method:

Thirty-seven patients who had hemorrhoids at the end of the physical examination evaluations of eighty-seven coccydynia patients were included in this study. Patients with hemorrhoids were divided into two groups: those with external hemorrhoids (Group 1) and those with internal hemorrhoids (Group 2). The demographic characteristics were recorded and pain assessment of the cases were compared with the numerical rating scale (NRS) during the sitting and standing periods. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results:

There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic characteristics (p>0.05). In Group 1, NRS (during standing) (5.83±3.51) was significantly higher than Group 2 (2.28±1.59) (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

In this study; it has been emphasized that hemorrhoids may be accompanied by coccydynia and external hemorrhoids should be kept in mind in patients with severe pain.
