ABSTRACT

Objective:

Bell’s palsy can be defined as non-progressive, not life threatening acute peripheric facial nevre paralysis usually healing with spontan remission. When Bell’s palsy occurs one of the most important question is what will the prognosis be.In this study we used EnoG (Electroneuronography) for determining prognosis and used House-Brackmann grading system for measured the recovery.

Material and Methods:

In this study 87 patient who presented to our clinic with Bell palsy in first three days after the paralysis began was examined. House-Brackmann grading system was used for all patient’s to grading facial paralysis and recovery. For determining the prognosis EnoG was performed to all patient among to third and fourteenth days after the facial paralysis had began.

Results:

In our study we accepted the House-Brackmann grade I and II healing as complete recovery and grade III and IV healing as non-complete recovery. Nineteen patient whose EnoG had showed 25% and less nerve fiber dysfunction recovered completely. Sixty two patient whose EnoG had showed 25% to 86% nerve fiber dysfunction recovered completely. Two patients whose EnoG had showed 25% to 86% nerve fibers dysfunction recovered non-completely. Three patients whose EnoG had showed 25% to 86% nerve fiber dysfunction recovered non-completely. One patient whose EnoG had showed 90% and high nerve fiber dysfunction recovered non-completely (House -Brackmann grade IV healing).

Conclusion:

In our study we found correlation between nerve fiber dysfunction at EnoG test with complete or non-complete recovery. We found EnoG test useful for determining the prognosis in Bell’s palsy.
