ABSTRACT

Objective:

To determine the frequency of adenomyosis in hystrectomy materials.

Materials and Methods:

We herein analyse the adenomyosis frequency in histopathologic evaluation of 299 abdominal, laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy materials performed due to bening causes in Adana Numune Training and Research Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The relationship between adenomyosis and preoperative endometrial biopsy results and the genitourinary symptoms of these patients were also evaluated.

Results:

299 hysterectomy materials are evaluated in this study and 79 adenomyosis (%26.4) case are determined. Adenomyosis was more frequent in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding and also in patients in whom irregular proliferative endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial polyps was determined at preoperative endometrial sampling (p<0.001); pelvic pain was not found to be a significant factor in the prediction of adenomyosis.

Conclusion:

Adenomyosis is a frequent finding in patients who have had hysterectomy for benign conditions. It is more frquent in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding and also in patients in whom irregular proliferative endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial polyps were determined at preoperative endometrial sampling.
